Suzi's SLS Safety Policy
When Thunder Roars, We Get Out.
Lightning comes first. Thunder comes later. Safety isn't a choice — it's the rule.
Every Life in My Pool Matters.
I follow Red Cross rules. I watch the weather. I protect my swimmers. That is my job. That is my honor. The moment I see lightning or hear thunder, everyone gets out — immediately, no exceptions, no debate.
"Rather safe than sorry."
What to expect when the sky changes.
See It or Hear It — Everyone Out
If you see lightning or hear thunder, everyone exits the water immediately. We don't wait to see if it gets closer. The first sign is the only sign we need.
15 Miles Is My Limit
If lightning is detected within 15 miles of our location, the pool is closed. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from any storm — and it can strike even when the sun is shining or the storm seems far away. (Source: NOAA)
At Least 30 Minutes to All-Clear
We return to the water only after at least 30 minutes have passed with no thunder or lightning. This follows Red Cross guidance — stay out of the water and away from the pool until conditions are clear.
Every New Flash Restarts the Clock
Every new flash of lightning or clap of thunder resets the 30-minute countdown from zero. There are no shortcuts. Most lightning deaths happen before rain starts or after it ends — the storm doesn't have to be overhead to be deadly.
Indoors Is the Safest Place
During a suspension, everyone moves indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle. No open shelters. No trees. No standing near the water. When thunder is heard, you're already close enough to be struck. (Source: NOAA)
Water + Lightning = Danger
Stay away from pools, oceans, lakes, and all open water during any lightning event. This applies to everyone — swimmers, parents, and spectators on deck.
Other Weather Conditions
Lessons are also held only when conditions are suitable. If the temperature is below 60°F or winds are at gale force, lessons will be rescheduled. Suzi will contact you as early as possible when weather requires a change.
